A PONCHO is a traditional Peruvian outer garment with no opening in front. You draw it on from over head. Beginning for the winter fashion collection of 2006, Shangri-La has introduced a fantastic new silk velvet devore variation of this age old garment.
Shangri-La also produces some ponchos from pashmina, woven from a layer of superfine hair combed by hand from the under belly of capra hircus goat which lives at altitudes of up to 15,000 feet in the Himalayas. Pashmina have been treasured by both men and women for its silk touch.
The pashmina is the fine inner growth of wool over which the goat grows another denser, coarser coat. Using a highly complicated and lengthy process, the finer fibers are separated from coarse outer fibers. Ponchos have a 16" neck opening and Ruanas are unseamed all the way down the front half of the piece.
When you've experienced the feather light touch of naturer's softest, finest wool or silk chiffon next to your skin, suddenly the meaning of luxury becomes clear.
