Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers; yea, upon all the houses of joy in the joyous city: Because the palaces shall be forsaken; the multitude of the city shall be left; the forts and towers shall be for dens for ever, a joy of wild asses, a pasture of flocks; Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest. Then judgement shall dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness remain in the fruitful field. And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever. In fact, you may not ever want to sleep again. I will tell you the story of how Animalville came to be, for I am older than most anyone in this story and I remember these things and I know why they happened and how the animals came to Animalville, and I know the secret story of how they came to save the world. You'll never look at a dog, or a cat, or a bird the same way again or a mouse or a monkey, or a gorilla, or a panda, or a koala. But you will listen very hard, waiting for one of them to speak, and you know what? They just might. You won't look up at the sky in the same way either, because things are up there, flying around just above our heads that didnt come from the Earth. There are indeed strange creatures from another planet that are waiting to come here. Waiting to conquer us. Waiting to take over. And do you know what? They just might. And who else knows about this? Well, the President, and the Air Force and N.A.S.A., some very special people who arent any of those things... and now you. __________________________________________________ The Author and Artist Richard Mueller author of countless Saturday morning cartoon scripts - from Attack of the Killer Tomatoes to X-Men) teams up with illustrator Egidio Victor Dal Chele - artist for such Saturday morning favorites as Scooby Doo and Robocop. Together this star team introduce the world of literature to the first adventure of Zoonauts, the alien intelligence enhanced animals that help save planet Earth from the evil powers of Amador. __________________________________________________ The Creators David Simons has been at the forefront of this project since its beginning. The "famous zoo animals" project began more than twenty years ago as the brainchild of David Simons and Cathy Lynn. It was not called "Zoonauts" until Sheldon Gosline invented that term. These original "famous zoo animals" were geared to a much younger target audience. Despite the production of a short cartoon trailer and some plush toys of "Patty Cake" the project was shelved for a few decades. After David started watching cartoons with his young son, Cody, he got the idea to resurrect the project. He hired a scriptwriter, Richard Mueller, to create a "bible" and a "pilot" for a cartoon series, entitled "Forced Landing : an Animalville U.S.A. and the Animalnauts Adventure." Richard brought in the Amadorians, the superpowers, and sci-fi space exploration history plot. David copyrighted this manuscript, and this was the manuscript that Sheldon Gosline started editing and expanding to turn into a book. David Simons has consistently been the story concept source and is highly motivated to seeing its success. __________________________________________________ The Finished Novel On 2 July, 2002, David Simons and Sheldon Gosline signed a contract for Shangri-La Publications to publish the book called at the time just Secret of Animalville, being an edition of the Richard Muller's contracted manuscript Animalville U.S.A. and the Animalnauts! Sheldon Gosline had already read through the work and been thinking of possible ways to rename it, so he added in the contract, possibly under a different title such as Zoonauts or Power Zoo or Zoo I.Q. With a considerable amount of coaxing, he convinced David to accept Shangri-La's renaming of the book to Zoonauts and to identifying all alien enhanced animals as "Zoonauts". The first editing work was to change all references in the manuscript from "animalnauts" to "zoo + nauts" the term Sheldon Gosline invented. Then the editor, Sheldon Gosline, turned his attention to problems of the story line. The "bible" part of the work had a few exciting episodes, but was slow moving and had no involvement of the two main children, Jen and Cody. They were not involved in the original plot "bible." It was a fairly preachy narrative by the parrot Methuselah. The first step of Sheldon's idea was to take part of the Amadorian tale from the "pilot" and put it in the front of the book to give the opening more zip. But then he was stuck as to how to blend the history lesson into the action story. The editor identified the manuscript's needed changes before it could be published : peer best friends, action and mystery involving the kids, secret knowledge that the kids had that typical adults did not know. He was almost at the point of telling everyone that the whole project was hopeless, when he woke up one morning with the answer: create another character (Sarafina) to whom the parrot Methuselah would tell the whole tale. Sara would be Jen's best friend who had a grandmother to raise her, named Flores. Sheldon also devised an incident at school involving Mrs. Patruski (modeled after his own terrifying first grade teacher named Patenza) that caused Jen to break down and cause the amazing story to tumble out. Then Sheldon Gosline built the kids into each aspect as the history story unfolded, mostly through a series of flashbacks. He put Cody in the panda rescue section and both children in as many action parts as possible. While Richard Mueller was not thrilled with Sheldon Gosline's changes, David Simons supported the radical editorial changes because he saw how they greatly strengthened the overall plot, and so David helped to convince Richard to accept them. Sheldon turned to You Min to help him add humorous Chinese dialogue in Pin Yin for the Panda rescue section in Tibet. At the last moment before going to press, the editor made Cody an important hero in that part of the story. Sheldon also added hints of why the Amadorians were experimenting on earth and why their population was so low one night the editor even had a nightmare about this that the Amadorians had experimented with vampire plants from another planet on Amador to provide an alternative food source. In Sheldon's dream the plants escaped from their contained environment and killed most of the population. He imbedded bits of this terrifying dream as hints that could be fleshed out in future books. __________________________________________________ As you can see, ZOONAUTS was a collaboration of many people with a lot of creative energy who came together to work on a very exciting project. We are now preparing to sign a contract with a Chinese publishing house for a Chinese language version of Zoonauts, and work on turning ZOONAUTS into a movie is already underway. The collaboration on this adventure is just beginning! We have many ideas about further developing the characters and look forward to new suggestions all the time. Maybe you have some too ... please share them with us!
